RJFC Stands Firm on Respect and Safety
Research Junior Football Club acknowledges the recent communication from the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL) regarding the unacceptable on-field and off-field behaviour that has occurred across the competition during the opening rounds of the 2026 season. We share the league’s concern, and we are united in our commitment to addressing it.
The incidents described in the NFNL’s memo — including games abandoned due to violence and abuse, umpires fearing for their safety, and spectators and officials involving themselves in on-field incidents — are deeply troubling. These behaviours are not reflective of the values that junior football should represent, and they have no place at our club or in our league.
At Research Junior Football Club, we are proud of the culture our players, coaches, volunteers and families have built together. Football at this level is about development, enjoyment and community — and we will not allow the actions of a few to undermine what so many work hard to create each and every week.
There is no place in our club for:
• Abuse or intimidation of umpires, officials or any participants
• Aggressive or violent behaviour from players, coaches or spectators
• Spectator or matchday official involvement in on-field incidents
• Any conduct that places the safety and wellbeing of others at risk
We want to be clear: umpires are a critical part of our game. Without them, our children simply cannot play. The growing number of umpires declining to officiate junior matches due to safety concerns is a wake-up call for all of us. Respecting umpires — before, during and after every game — is non-negotiable.
Research Junior Football Club fully supports the NFNL’s directive for Rounds 4 and 5, requiring teams to meet in the centre of the ground with umpires prior to the start of each match to reinforce expected behaviour and the spirit of the game. We remind all members that only Team Managers may approach an umpire during breaks — at quarter time, half time and three-quarter time — and only to seek clarification on white cards. No other officials may approach an umpire.
Any behaviour that falls below the standard expected at our club will be addressed in line with NFNL policies and codes of conduct. We cannot and will not condone, defend or excuse conduct that is inconsistent with our values.
We thank the overwhelming majority of our families, coaches, players and volunteers who continue to represent Research Junior Football Club with pride, positivity and respect each week. Let’s keep it that way.
